Batak Spitz-Breeds, Characteristics, Care, Upkeep

History of origin

One of the oldest dog breeds, images of Spitz can be seen in ancient Greek drawings and antique dishes, and in paintings by medieval artists. It is believed that the name “Spitz” was first recorded in German sources in 1450. The fluffy dogs were very popular with German aristocrats.

A more utilitarian use of Spitz took place on the island of Sumatra among the Indonesian Bataks (hence the name of the breed). Whole packs of Spitz lived in Batak settlements, guarding houses, accompanying their owners on hunts, and fishing.

Swedish whalers considered Spitz dogs to be talismans that could sniff out and lure whales, and each ship’s quarters had a doghouse. The dogs were provided with food and were considered members of the crew.

Later, Batak Spitz were taken along on the road to guard luggage, but nowadays they feel great as companions and pets.

Description

Very cute small dogs of almost square format with triangular ears, characteristic smiling face of a fox and very fluffy fur. The tail is curled like a ringlet and lies on the back. On the hind legs – “pants”, on the front – feathering.

Previously, breeders preferred white color, but now they believe that the color of the animal’s fur can be any: white, red, fawn and even black. The main thing is that there is long guard hair and very thick undercoat.

Character

Cheerful, fearless, friendly dogs. Good guards – at the slightest hint of danger, the owner will be warned by a loud bark. However, as soon as the Spitz are convinced that yesterday’s stranger is the owner’s friend, they will immediately involve the guest in games and beg for treats. However, they will still bark loudly – but on a different note.

Care
In general, the Batak Spitz is an unpretentious and hardy animal with good health. But in order for the dog to look beautiful, you need to take care of its fur. Periodically wash the pet and comb it with a special brush 2-3 times a week . In wet and dirty off-season, it is worth dressing the furry pets in raincoats that will not let their fur get dirty.

Content
Of course, the ideal option for living for Batak Spitz, like almost all other dogs, is a country house where they can run around the area and frolic to their heart’s content. But city conditions are also great for them if the owners are not too lazy to walk and play with them.

In Europe, it will be very difficult to find a Batak Spitz puppy. The main population of these dogs is concentrated in Indonesia, so you will have to order a puppy there. Although this is not the most expensive breed, the final amount can be significant, since you will have to pay for paperwork and delivery.
