Character
It is easy to notice that the American Mastiff is a copy of the English Mastiff in appearance . In fact, it appeared as a result of crossing the English Mastiff and the Anatolian Shepherd. The main breeder of American Mastiffs is considered to be Frederica Wagner. The breeder wanted to create a dog that would look like the English Mastiff, but would be cleaner and healthier.
Interestingly, the American Mastiff was recognized as a purebred breed only recently – in 2000, it was registered by the Continental Kennel Club. However, only a dog belonging to the Frederica Wagner Club can be considered a true American Mastiff. The small and rare breed is still in the process of its formation and development.
American Mastiffs combine the qualities of their English relatives and sheepdogs: these calm, good-natured dogs are very devoted to their owners. They are easy to train, listen attentively to the trainer and generally show themselves to be gentle and balanced pets.
In everyday life, the American Mastiff is not aggressive and peaceful, but when it comes to protecting the family, this is a completely different dog – he makes a decision in a flash and goes on the attack. However, the American Mastiff is indifferent to strangers, even friendly.

Despite all the positive qualities, the American Mastiff needs a strong hand and training . And it’s not even about its character, but about its size. Often the dog reaches gigantic sizes, and it is very difficult to cope with a huge spoiled animal. That is why it is necessary to train it from childhood.
The American Mastiff, like most large dogs, gets along well with other animals in the house. He is too kind to mindlessly divide territory or favorite toys.
The dog treats children with understanding and love, even toddlers. Mastiffs make excellent nannies, patient and attentive.

Care
The American Mastiff does not require careful grooming. It is enough to comb the dog’s short hair once a week, no more. During the shedding period, the dog should be combed a couple of times a week. It is important not to forget about trimming the claws , if they do not wear down on their own, and brushing the pet’s teeth.
Interestingly, the American Mastiff does not have excessive salivation. It is easier to care for than its English relative.
Conditions of detention
The American Mastiff will feel great outside the city, in a private home. Despite its large size, the dog is not put in a kennel, and it is not recommended to keep it in an aviary – the dog will be best in free walking.
Like other large dogs, the American Mastiff can have joint problems. Therefore, it is especially important to monitor the physical activity of puppies, not allowing them to run, jump, or climb stairs on their own for too long.
